Healthy Eating Series: Crash diet - Fad of size Zero!
There are innumerable good and bad stories about crash diets while browsing the internet. Let’s see if it is good or bad for us.
The crash diet is nothing but a desperate attempt to get thin too fast. It comprises restricting self to extremely low calories. Foods are the best source of essential nutrition. Sudden restriction of nutrition leads to detrimental health effects. The results of this “quick fix” are short-lived and eventually have negative effects on body and mind (1).
The disadvantages of such a diet are (2):
1. Deprive you of essential nutrients due to imbalanced proportions.
2. Loss of muscle mass, which leads to reduced strength for life.
3. Due to deficient calories, our body starts conserving energy and leads to reduction in metabolism, which is the last thing you want while losing weight.
4. Negative relationship with food. You may develop an aversion to some food or obsession with a certain food. People may end up overeating or binging.
5. You may feel fatigue, dizziness and weakness. Lack of carbohydrates may affect your brain functions. A few of the common problems are excessive hair loss, anemia and electrolyte disturbance (3).
6. It affects your mood and can make you cranky, feeling low and lack of concentration.
It is highly recommended by experts not to fall prey to such a fad. If at all, one should do this under medical supervision.
