Polycystic ovarian disease (PCOS)

Polycystic ovarian disease or PCOS is a hormonal disorder, that is seen in women of reproductive age group 1The primary problem is ovulation dysfunction and the follicles do not mature. The follicles collect in the ovary, which leads to hormonal disturbance. The ovary produces an excess of male hormones, like testosterone. This then leads to irregular menses, excess growth of hair on the face and chest, and excessive acne (pimples) 2

It often begins during the teenage years or young adult years2In the adolescent age group ( 10 to 19 yrs), it can also cause anxiety and depression. If untreated, it can cause infertility in women. It is often associated with lifestyle diseases like type 2 diabetes and obesity3. As per western literature, in the adolescent age group, the occurrence has been found to be between 6 to 18%4

One should seek medical help if you have irregular periods with manifestations like excessive acne or excess hair growth. One can also take some steps to reduce the symptoms, apart from medical therapy. Eating the right and nutritious food, keeping oneself fit through regular exercise, and weight management5. I will be further discussing these steps in my other blog posts. Will be adding the links soon.

Stay healthy and stay safe.
